The Role of the Committee

It is the job of the committee to represent the views of the classes at Green Theme meetings. It is also the job of the committee to inform all members of the school community about the ways in which we can care for out school, local and natural environments. The main aims of the committee are as follows: • Reduce overall waste levels in the school • Reduce consumption of water • Analyse ways in which we can conserve water • Maintain and enhance school garden beds/gardens • Waste and recycling bins in each classroom are to be correctly used and closely monitored • Lunch waste is to be brought home from now, this should reduce our waste and it’s good practice • Katelyn will check that the photocopier is switched off each evening and Damien will ensure that kettles are switched off also. Safety is always mentioned and no member will attempt to turn off any switches if it’s not safe to do so • We encourage the notion of car-pooling amongst families when travelling to school. The reason for this is that it makes more economic sense and it also helps reduce damage made to the environment • We need to focus on recycling batteries and old mobile phones in school. This is very important. Children should ask family friends, relations etc. to please give their old devices to the school • All classes should ensure that there is minimum lights on in the classroom if a DVD is playing • Lights should be switched off at break/lunchtimes • Doors entering and exiting the school buildings should be kept closed to conserve heat, especially during colder months. Main exception, door leading to office. • Windows should be closed if heating is switched on • If the day is bright outside, less lighting may be needed • More signage will be placed around the school to ensure the successful implementation of these points • Nadine & Chloe will make signs for ‘recycle batteries’ • Sadie, Diarmuid and Ciaran will make sign ‘take home lunch waste’ • Amy will make sign ‘please ensure door is closed properly’ • Oisin, Clodagh & Realtin will make signs ‘ close the windows if the heat is on’ • Niall will make sign ‘switch off lights after use’ for toilets • If any pupil in any class has ideas for the Green Committee, please let the committee know and we’ll try to implement it.
